Current Projects & News
February 2003
I am starting this new year out with a photo expedition to the Deep South. I am also planning to add a couple of new galleries of photos during our frequent snow days. So far, this has been Rochesters snowiest winter since 1977.
June 2002
After much consultation and soul searching I have decided to discontinue memberships and the newsletter for the AHP. I have finally come to the realization that unless I have an extremely large number of members, it is simply not financially practical. Our efforts will now be directed toward exhibitions, print sales and the search for grant and foundation monies.
I am now writing a regular column for Route 66 Magazine titled The Other Road, concentrating on information and my impressions of roads other than Route 66. Also running a promotion for AHP collectors prints in the same magazine.
Recently I traveled to Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana looking for new material. Spent time with AHP supporters Al and Sharon Coleman exploring their roots in KY and visiting road attractions.
U.S. 31 was explored for its entire length in Indiana photographing for an exhibition at the Indiana Historical Society in Indianapolis in 2003.
In Indiana I visited the Worlds Largest Egg in Mentone and in Kokomo saw the Worlds Largest Tree Stump and Steer (two separate attractions housed under the same roof).
Plans are in the works to revisit Indiana for more extensive coverage.
I am feverishly working on the AHP book with renowned designer and raconteur Frank Petronio.
January 2002 I am working on a book of AHP images with designer Frank Petronio. Presently we are assembling several sample signatures for review and comment. The latest idea from Frank is to develop a large map of the United States and key the images to the map. This provides us a dramatic visual representation of our travels and coverage (and we think that most of our potential audience likes maps in general.)
If you have an intact 1930s-1960s Highway Map of the continental US, preferably from a bankrupt company (so we can reproduce it with impunity!) please contact us.
Meanwhile, time has been consumed with traveling between our home base near Rochester, NY to Kalamazoo, MI as family matters are pressing. We always travel with loaded cameras, although we may have to start including Canadian Highway attractions ...
